HOW TO: French All The Seams
Knowing how to do a French seam will change your life (no, seriously)!
Its so easy, yet creates such a lovely and polished finish for your garments. Mostly used with sheer or light weight woven fabrics, however, you could definitely use this technique on light to mid-weight fabrics too - think cotton lawn, voile, poplin, shirting.
*in this tutorial I am working with 1.5cm / 5/8in seam allowance.
Step 1:
With WRONG sides together, sew your seam using 1cm of your seam allowance.
Step 2:
Trim back your seam allowance to 3-4mm. Press seam flat (but not open).
Step 3:
With RIGHT sides together, finish your French seam by sewing the remaining 0.5cm of your seam allowance, encasing the raw edges from Step 2. Press.
Done!
How fantastic is that? It’s one of the best (and simplest) techniques to give your “me-mades” a really professional and couture finish.
